Individual psychotherapy or counseling is an effective treatment for depression, anxiety, other mood disorders, chronic physical pain, phobias, sleep and appetite disorders, and some personality disorders. However, not all psychotherapies are the same. Cognitive-behavioral therapies have been studied more than most approaches to counseling/psychotherapy and have generally been shown to be the most effective therapeutic approach to most of these disorders. Dr. Rick L. Jennings, Dr. George M. Harper, and Sylvia S. Mork, MSW, LISW, have been trained in cognitive-behavioral therapies and tend to use these approaches as the primary therapy with most clients. However, we at Counseling & Assessment work with our clients in order to tailor a therapeutic approach which is both effective and most comfortable. For example, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has been shown to be an effective treatment for traumatic memories and may be included in the therapeutic regimen designed for a particular client. Many times, clients find it most helpful to simply be able to express their concerns and feelings to an empathic listener. Thus, supportive counseling is often a useful approach. Hypnosis, relaxation training, and behavior modification are also utilized as needed. Additionally, many clients find it helpful to discuss spiritual issues and to integrate these into their therapy. We strive to work with our clients to formulate treatment goals within the most effective and comfortable therapeutic approach.
